EXECUTIVE BOARD

2010-2011 Executive Board

The SHAV Board of Directors is made up of 10 members who work on behalf of the membership and professional community.  Board members are elected by the membership and serve a two-year term.  The president's term is divided into three phases (president-elect, president and past president) to facilitate a smooth transition.  

Concerns, suggestions and comments should be directed to the appropriate Board member for discussion at the quarterly Board meetings. 


President
Scott Rankins, M.S., CCC-SLP

Scott D. Rankins received his Bachelor of Science from Nazareth College of Rochester, NY in 1986 and his Master of Science in Education from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA in 1988 after serving in the U.S. Navy from 1977-1981. He has been a member of SHAV from 1988-1990 and 1993-present. He has practiced as a Speech-Language Pathologist at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (Norfolk), United States Naval Hospital, Camp Lester (Okinawa, Japan), Central Virginia Speech & Hearing Center (Lynchburg). He currently co-owns (1994) and practices at Blue Ridge Therapy Associates in Lynchburg, a private outpatient OT, PT & ST rehabilitation facility for pediatric & geriatric populations. He was SHAV’s Vice President for Continuing Education from 2006-2008.

President Elect
Kathy Dickinson, M.Ed., CCC-SLP

Kathy Dickinson graduated from Mary Washington College (now the University of Mary Washington) in 1987 with a B.A. in Communication Disorders, as part of a cooperative program with the University of Virginia and received her M.Ed. in Speech-Language Pathology from UVA in 1989. Kathy also completed her Post-Master’s Certificate for Principalship and Supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her first position was as a staff clinician and later the chief of Speech-Language Pathology at the Bristol Regional Speech and Hearing Center in Bristol, VA and its satellite center in Lebanon, VA. She served as the Clinical Supervisor of SLP at Cumberland Hospital for Children and Adolescents in New Kent, Virginia, and she was honored while working in Spotsylvania as the Teacher of the Year at Wilderness Elementary School. Kathy has taught numerous courses in Speech-Language Pathology. Her areas of clinical interest are pediatric auditory processing disorders, childhood apraxia of speech, and literacy. Kathy has been an active member of SHAV since 1989, and served on the first Public Information and Relations Committee in the early '90s.

Katrina (Tina) Eid, Ph.D.

Katrina (Tina) Eid has been a practicing pediatric speech-language pathologist for around 24 years. For most of those years she has been working with elementary age children in the Virginia public schools. She has also taught as an adjunct professor in the Washington, D.C. area. Tina’s areas of clinical and professional expertise and interest are in speech and language development and disorders in young children and in assessment and intervention with bilingual children. ina received both her Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of Virginia and she is a proud Wahoo!!

Vice President for Member Services
Seijra Toogood, M.Ed., CCC-SLP

Seijra Toogood received her B.A. from James Madison University in 1998 and her M.Ed. from University of Georgia in 2000.   She has worked in the public school system for the past nine years, serving the elementary school population in both Fairfax County and Prince William County Schools.  She has served children in the special education settings and has specialized experience in Autism, Down Syndrome and Moderate to Severe Disabilities.  Seijra continues to provide Early Intervention Therapy services to children through Infant and Toddler Connections of Prince William County in the home environment.

Vice President for Government Affairs
Cornelia Long, M.S., CCC-SLP

Cornelia Long has been in private practice for the last five years while rendering services in public school systems in Prince William and Fairfax County Public Schools.  Cornelia’s passion includes the military family, as she was a former military spouse who knows first- hand the difficulty the military family faces while trying to access specialty care services like speech therapy.   To that end, running for VP of Governmental affairs affords Cornelia the opportunity to rally on behalf of military and civilian families, adult clients and speech pathologists in the state of VA.  Cornelia has also served as speech pathologist in acute care settings, rehabilitation manager in skilled nursing facilities, and CEO of SLP Communications Solutions, Inc.  Cornelia enjoys presenting to audiences to raise awareness about the awesome filed d of speech pathology and speech-language acquisition.  She is also the founder of the Stroke Support Group of Killeen, TX.

Vice President for Audiology
Donna Mallory, Au.D.

Donna Mallory has practiced audiology for 25 years; the last thirteen years in Virginia.  She graduated from the University of Redlands (in California) with a Master of Science degree in Audiology; and received her Au.D. in 2006 from PCO (now Salus University).  She has worked in several different areas in audiology, including industrial, medical ENT offices, hospital newborn hearing screening programs and school district consultant.  Donna was past president and a founder of the Audiology Association of Virginia, which voted to merge with SHAV in 2010.   She opened Culpeper Hearing Center, LLC, in 2006 as a diagnostic/hearing aid dispensing practice and continues as the sole owner, providing services for all ages.  She will also be joining JMU in the Fall, 2010, as a part-time clinical supervisor.  She is also involved with HEARt of the Village, a non-profit organization devoted to providing training to medical professionals and hearing impaired children in Nairobi, Kenya.

Vice President for Speech-Language Pathology
Ann Marie Whaley, M.S., CCC-SLP

Ann Marie Whaley is a 2002 graduate of Radford University with a B.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders and a 2004 graduate of Vanderbilt University with a M.S. in Hearing and Speech Sciences.  Ms. Whaley works as a Speech-Language Pathologist with the contract services division of Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Center at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, VA.  Ms. Whaley serves on the Neuroscience Collaborative Practice Group which steered the JCAHO Primary Stroke Center Certification process at St. Mary’s Hospital in 2005.    Ms. Whaley also has experience with infant feeding and swallowing assessment and intervention.  She is part of an interdisciplinary team of therapists who are regularly consulted to see infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  She regularly provides in-services to nursing staff in the unit and at other Bon Secours hospitals regarding the role of the SLP in the NICU, developmental care, and how developmental care relates to feeding and swallowing with premature and medically fragile infants.

Vice President for Public Relations and Communication
Angela Ramsey, M.S., CCC-SLP

Angela Ramsey received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Virginia followed by her Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from James Madison University.   Following her degree, Ms Ramsey has enjoyed over 11 years experience in the educational field, with additional time spent as a private practitioner, and clinical service volunteer. She has provided services as a speech pathologist in Fairfax County, Virginia; the Marshall Islands, Kwajalein; Frederick, Maryland; Los Alamos, New Mexico, and is presently practicing in the Prince William school district.   While actively pursuing her profession, she augmented her skills by serving as the Director of Community Education for the island of Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands.   Ms Ramsey enjoys working with a diverse population and the constant changing environment this entails.  She enjoys coming up with unique solutions and incorporating fun into functional communication.

Vice President for Continuing Education
Valerie St. John, M.S., CCC-SLP

Valerie H. St. John received her Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from Longwood College in 1997 and her Master of Science in Communication Disorders from James Madison University in 1999.  She has been employed at Blue Ridge Therapy Associates in Lynchburg since graduating from JMU.  She works with children and adults in the outpatient setting and also works with children at one of the local Head Start centers.

Vice President of Finance
Shawnna English, M.S., CCC-SLP

Shawnna English received her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from James Madison University in 1992.  She is currently the SLP Clinical Coordinator at Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Centers in Richmond, Virginia.  Her career in speech-language pathology includes more than 13 years experience with adults in the acute care, inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient arenas.  Shawnna's major areas of interest are brain injury, cognitive-communication disorders and dysphagia.

Office Terms

The Office of President is a three year term, one year as President-Elect, one year as President and one year as Past President.

Office Descriptions

President
The President shall serve as chief executive officer of the Association, shall serve as Chair of the Executive Committee, shall serve with the Vice President of Finance as the official signatory of the Association on all contractual agreements, and shall coordinate the functions of the Board of Directors and who shall automatically become Past President at the end of the term of President.

President-Elect
The President-Elect shall serve as chief executive officer of the Association and as Chair of the Executive Committee in the absence of the President, shall work in conjunction with the President in developing goals and policies of the Association, and shall automatically become President at the end of the term of President-Elect.

Past President
The Past President shall serve as an ex officio member of the Board of Directors and shall serve as the chief executive officer in the absence of the President and President-Elect.

Vice President of Public Relations and Communications
The Vice President for Public Relations and Communication shall lead the Association in the areas of marketing/public relations and communication.

Vice President of Finance
The Vice President of Finance shall be responsible to the Board of Directors for all financial affairs of the Association and in conjunction with the President serves as the official signatory of the Association on all outside contractual agreements.

Vice President For Member Services
The Vice President for Member Services shall be responsible for the direction of services provided to the general membership.   

Vice President For Speech-Language Pathology
The Vice President for Speech-Language Pathology shall provide leadership in the clinical area of speech-language pathology. This will entail maintaining regular and consistent communication with the VP for Audiology and among the related interest groups/committees.

Vice President of Audiology
The Vice Presidents for Audiology shall provide leadership in the clinical area of audiology respectively.  This will entail maintaining regular and consistent communication with the VP of Speech-Language Pathology and among the related interest groups/committees.

Vice President of Continuing Education:
The Vice President for Continuing Education shall be responsible for the planning of the annual conference and/or additional educational opportunities.

Vice President of Governmental Affairs
The Vice President for Governmental and Professional Affairs shall provide leadership in the professional concerns of the members.  This shall include monitoring governmental and third party activities that may impact the Association and its membership, and advocating for the Association, its members and the clients served.
 

 

Nominations for board positions should be directed to the President Elect. Nominees must be voting members of SHAV. Self nominations are permitted.
