Why Won’t Little Timmy Eat?:  A Look at Pediatric Dysphagia and Feeding Disorder

Wednesday, May 23, 2012
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Presented by Shannon Salley, SLP.D., CCC-SLP

Registration Form

Presenter
Dr. Shannon Salley is an assistant professor and Coordinator of SLP Online in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Program at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia.  Dr. Salley’s areas of interest include dysphagia, cognitive disorders, and child speech/language disorders.

Webinar
Speech-Language Pathologists who work in the medical setting are routinely involved in the management of swallowing disorders in adults.  However, in recent years, SLPs’ caseloads in both medical and school settings have started to include more young children with chronic feeding and swallowing problems associated with multiple medical disorders.  This change in client population in part reflects advances in medical technology as well as federal legislation mandating that integrated services by made available to children from birth to 21 years of age.  Despite the increasing number of children requiring feeding and swallowing intervention, most SLPs did not receive formal training in pediatric dysphagia during their graduate programs (Hall 2001).  This webinar will review the key concepts related to pediatric dysphagia and feeding disorders.

After completing this course, participants will be able to identify anatomy/physiology of various systems associated with normal swallowing ability, identify medical disorders and other etiologies of pediatric dysphagia and feeding disorders, and discuss evaluation and treatment procedures for pediatric dysphagia and feeding disorders.

Webinar fee is $25.

More information and login procedures will be provided to participants after registration.
