Ed Bice, M.Ed., CCC-SLP


Ed Bice, M.Ed., CCC-SLP,  is a Clinical Consultant for IOPI Medical and works clinically at a nonprofit speech and hearing clinic. He has experience in various settings and has held various leadership positions, including a Regional Manager, Vice President of Clinical Services, and Chief Operating Officer.  He is the co-coordinator of the Speech and Hearing Association of Virginia’s Feeding and Swallowing Disorders group and President-elect of the association. He co-authored Adult Dysphagia: Clinical Reasoning and Decision-Making Guide (Plural Publishing). Ed has served as an expert witness in court cases related to swallowing and swallowing disorders and has been an invited speaker for universities, state, national, and international conventions on various topics in dysphagia.

Heidi Miller, MS, CCC-SLP


Heidi is a pediatric Speech Language Pathologist at University of Virginia Children’s Hospital. She has worked in the NICU, PICU, general pediatric floors, outpatient services, and is currently the lead SLP in their Early Developmental Clinic. In addition to her full-time SLP role she also is a writer for The Informed SLP. She previously led the Virginia Pediatric Dysphagia Collaborative that connected inpatient SLPs across the state to engage in CEU events, learning, and networking.

Alison R. King, Ph.D, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT


Alison earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Disorders from Appalachian State University, her Master of Speech-Language Pathology from the University of South Carolina, and her Ph.D. in Education with a Concentration in Special Education and Disability Policy from VCU. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings including private practice, early intervention, schools, and served on the cochlear implant team at VCU. Alison began supervising students early in her career and loves guiding new clinicians! She currently is an Assistant Professor in the CSD program at Longwood University. She firmly believes in giving back to the profession and has done so by serving on the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology as well as the Virginia Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Advisory Board. In her free time, Alison is an avid reader, concert-goer, gardener, and is addicted to the Crime Junkie podcast!

Erin Wallace, PhD, MS, CCC-SLP


Erin Stehle Wallace is an Assistant Professor at Longwood University in Communication Sciences and Disorders. In 2020, she received her doctoral degree in Special Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. Before completing her doctorate, Erin worked as a speech-language pathologist in a variety of settings including public and private elementary and high schools, private clinics, an audiology clinic, school for children with autism, and home-based therapy. Her passion lies in early childhood and elementary age youth with language delay and disorder. Erin’s research interests include the use of language-supportive strategies and their association with child language outcomes, children and youth with language delay and challenging behaviors, and collaboration amongst speech-language pathologists and educators. Erin resides in Richmond, Virginia with her partner and two sons. She enjoys running, spending time outside, and soaking up her boys’ fleeting childhood.

Vice President for Governmental and Professional Affairs

Melanie-Joy H Dorn MA CCC-SLP, RYT-200 


Melanie Dorn has practiced as a clinical Speech Language Pathologist working with adults with neurological communication disorders since 1991. After many years as an adjunct professor and presenting at state conventions she landed her dream job in 2016 as an Assistant Professor at The George Washington University. At GWU she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses throughout the year (Foundations of Human Communication, Voice and Diction, Anatomy of Speech and Hearing and Neural Substrates) advises undergraduates within the SLHS Department and is the faculty advisor for GWUs National Student Speech, Language and Hearing Association.


Melanie became a certified LSVT/LOUD® Clinician in 2010, completed her 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) training through Yoga Fit in 2012 and competed HLVYM® Vocal Yoga Instructor training in 2016.   She began the Yoga for All Abilities classes at The Stroke Comeback Center in 2013. Through Vocal Yoga HLVYM® she can combine her passions of voice and yoga through the common denominator, the breath. 

She is the only Vocal Yoga teacher teaching a Vocal Yoga class specifically for people with voice disorders including people with Parkinson’s Disease.  Melanie serves on The Stroke Comeback Center’s Board of Directors and Professional Advisory Board. When she is not on her mountain bike or teaching yoga, she enjoys presenting and conducting research focused on group therapy for people with Parkinson’s Disease.

Vice President for Speech-Language Pathology

Somer Stone, M.Ed., CCC-SLP, CAS


Somer Stone holds her Bachelor of Science in Speech Language Pathology & Audiology with minors in Psychology and Special Education from Old Dominion University, and her Master of Education in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Virginia. She has earned a credential as a certified autism specialist. Somer works in the public school setting, supporting students at the elementary, high school, and post-high levels, and has experience in pediatric clinical settings. She volunteers with the SHAV Schools Group and serves on subcommittees for conference planning. She values networking and enjoys bringing people together to form friendships and help others build lasting professional relationships.


Somer has professional interest in articulation, caseload management, and comprehensive educational evaluations.


Somer is passionate about equipping the next generation by incorporating her professional skills and personal interests. In her free time, she enjoys attending and volunteering at her local church, mini-travels, and concerts.

Vice President of Event Planning

M. Johanna Fox Klein, MS, CCC-SLP


M. Johanna Fox Klein was born and raised in the picturesque Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. She pursued her academic endeavors at James Madison University, where she earned both her Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and her Master of Science degree in Speech Language Pathology.


Johanna brings over two decades of dedicated experience as a school-based speech-language pathologist (SLP), currently serving preschool through middle school populations within Rockingham County. Her commitment extends beyond her direct work with students; she has been an active and valued contributor to the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia (SHAV). Her involvement includes significant contributions as a member of the Conference Committee, serving two terms as SHAV Vice President of Continuing Education, and participation in the Honors Committee. Most recently, she had the distinct honor of serving as President of the association.


With a passion for nurturing the next generation of SLPs, Johanna finds great satisfaction in sharing her expertise and has supervised graduate students in both school-based settings and at the James Madison University Speech/Language Clinic. Her current professional interests are centered around articulation and executive functioning, particularly its intricate relationship to communication disorders and language differences observed in diverse populations, including those within rural communities. She also deeply appreciates the diagnostic process, often likening it to detective work, as she meticulously works to determine if a child presents with an educational impairment.


Johanna currently resides in McGaheysville, Virginia, where she shares her home with her husband, son, daughter, and cat.

Vice President for Professional Development

Emily N. Bromer, M.S., CCC-SLP

 

Emily earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and her Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Longwood University. She has been working as a school-based speech-language pathologist through contracts with Allied Instructional Services, and now as a direct hire with Appomattox County Public Schools (ACPS). She has experience working with students in preschool through 12th grade with various communication needs. She is a member of the interdisciplinary Assistive Technology (AT) team at Appomattox County Public Schools which strives to provide all students with access to and increased participation in their educational programming. Additionally, Emily works as an adjunct clinical educator at Longwood’s Speech, Hearing, and Learning Services (SHLS) clinic. She enjoys educating, supervising, and supporting future speech-language pathologists. When she is not working, volunteering with SHAV, or engaging in continuing education sessions, Emily loves to read books, host game nights with friends/family, and watch movies or reality TV shows with her husband, Tanner, and cat, Lucy.

Juhi Vora, MA, CCC-SLP


Juhi Vora, M.A., CCC-SLP is a licensed medical Speech-Language Pathologist with over a decade of clinical experience across diverse healthcare settings, including acute care, outpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing, and home health. She currently serves as a Speech-Language Pathologist IV at Valley Health – Warren Memorial Hospital where she provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for adults and geriatrics with speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing disorders.

Committed to advancing the profession, Juhi supervises graduate students and clinical fellows and facilitates the Speech Pathology Collaborative across Valley Health. She also leads a community-based Stroke Support Group and participates in community outreach initiatives and program development.

In addition to her clinical work, Juhi is an emerging leader in the field, volunteering with the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia (SHAV) and serving as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Indian Speech Language and Hearing Association. 

Juhi enjoys reading books, traveling and exploring different cultures and cuisines and spending time with her husband, daughter and dog, Maui.

SHAV Student Representatives

Gloria Ren is a fourth-year student at the University of Virginia, pursuing a degree in Speech Communication Disorders. She currently works as a Rehabilitation and Mobility Technician at UVA Medical Center and serves as a project lead in Dr. Mason’s Imaging and Communication Outcomes Lab, where she contributes to innovative research on pediatric velopharyngeal insufficiency. In addition, Gloria represents Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky as the National NSSLHA Speech-Language Pathology Student State Officer and volunteers with the Special Olympics.


Her clinical interests span the full scope of medical speech-language pathology, with a passion for serving diverse patient populations across the lifespan. In her free time, Gloria enjoys climbing, reading, and spending time with friends and family.

Logan is an undergraduate student at Longwood University studying to achieve her Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. She is passionate about working with children and hopes to one day become a pediatric speech-language pathologist. She chose this career path because she has a passion for helping others. Logan is also a part of speech related clubs such as NSSHLA and Operation Smile and enjoys volunteering with the hospice center in Farmville, Virginia. In her free time, she likes to bake, hike, and spend time at her local church.
