The mission of the SHAV DEI Group is to foster a greater sense of belonging among all audiologists and speech-language pathologists,and increase the diversity, size, and impact of SHAV membership.
SHAV DEI Group Leads
Dorian Lee-Wilkerson, PhD, CCC/SLP, is an associate professor in the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at Hampton University. She has had over 30 years of experience as a speech-language pathologist and faculty member. Her research interests include scholarship of teaching and learning, cultural diversity, and childhood language disorders. She has co-authored several publications and presentations in these areas. She currently serves as a member of the Council of Academic Accreditation and has served as a Multicultural Issues Board (MIB) member and was the 2020 MIB chair. She is an ASHA Fellow and the recipient of the Martha Mullins-Callender Award from the Communication Disorders Foundation of Virginia, and the Excellence in Diversity Award from the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD).
Chila Nicholson is a certified speech-language pathologist and clinical educator in the School of Speech-Language Pathology at Old Dominion University where she also serves as Clinic Coordinator at the ODU Speech and Hearing Clinic. An alumna of ODU, Ms. Nicholson earned both her BS and MS in speech-language pathology. With a career spanning both clinical and educational settings, Ms. Nicholson has extensive experience working with children and adults with diverse communication needs. Prior to her academic role, she served in Suffolk Public Schools, providing speech therapy to preschool and elementary-aged children. She is deeply committed to cultural responsiveness and humility in clinical care and education. Her teaching emphasizes openness, self-reflection, and learning from client experiences to prepare students for inclusive, compassionate, and culturally informed practice.
